It’ s no joke, by using her rules and ideas, I have kids who run to the closet when I announce that it’s school time. july4 fireworks picture

The 4th of July fireworks from our local Shopco parking lot.

The fourth of July was spectacular at our house! We had the usual feast of sausages, potato salad, fruit and chips.

Our youngest daughter made her first “I am really on my own, cake”. It turned out beautifully and tasted great.

July 4th cake. Doing something yourself is a great esteem booster.

However the highlight was one of those unplanned learning moments that can be so fun. Our son in law brought liquid nitrogen to the party in a large metal bottle so the kids could make ice cream without the wait.

It was fun helping each of the littles combine the ingredients for the ice cream. They love to cook.

Then Brady poured the liquid nitrogen in the ice cream and WOW, we had fog everywhere; clouds on the floor so to speak. The kids LOVED it. The ice cream was amazingly delicious!!

Simply delicious home made ice cream!

But as guys and kids will, the fun spilled out of the jar and the ice cream making to any other feasible place. It was poured on the kitchen floor and we all ran rampant through the clouds. It was poured down the stairs and into the sink filled with hot water. Lots of silliness, lots of laughter and fun.

Did you know that if you pour liquid nitrogen on an inflated balloon the balloon deflates. That is because the nitrogen is so cold that it cools off the air in the balloon taking up less space and it deflates. Hold it in the warm room air and it re-inflates. Cool!

Our deflated balloon re-inflating

We learned that nitrogen makes up 80% of what we breathe. Jack couldn’t get his mind around the fact that what was making ice cream is also what we breathe. Lesson for a future year!

We also learned that most elements can be liquid, gas and solid. Just so you know, liquid nitrogen can cause very serious burns and must be handled with great care and only by adults. : )

July fourth was a learning day at the Johnson’s, learning a bit about chemistry and our wonderful country. Happy Fourth of July!

Teddy Bear Picnic Day-July 10th

by Mary Ann on July 4, 2012

teddy bear picnic day picture

July 10 - Teddy Bears Picnic Day

During the early 1900s, President Theodore Roosevelt was in office as President of the United States. While hunting in Mississippi in 1902, he refused to shoot a small bear. The Washington Post picked up on this story, and made a cartoon of the event. Toy store owners, Morris and Rose Michtom, wrote to President Roosevelt for permission to call their stuffed animals “Teddy Bears”. Teddy bears became wildly popular. “The original teddy bear, from 1903, was given to the Smithsonian by Teddy Roosevelt’s grandson, Kermit.  Today that bear is in the collections of our National Museum of American History.”

A song about a Teddy Bears Picnic reached peak popularity in 1988 when collectibles dealer Royal Selangor launched Teddy Bears’ Picnic Day. Many people bought the collectibles and starting giving them as birthday gifts. Soon, children’s birthday parties started to have “Teddy Bears’ Picnic” themes. Eventually, this particular theme became so popular among parents, preschools and kindergarten classes, that parents and institutions rallied to have the event named a holiday.

July 10 was officially named National Teddy Bears’ Picnic Day in 1988. Why not celebrate July 10th with your family and have a beary good time! You will find some teddy bear picnic ideas here to get you started.

Take your teddy bear (or teddy bears) out for a day in the sun. It’s time for a Teddy Bear Picnic! Make a few PB& J sandwiches, some cookies, and a jug of Kool-Aid. Take a blanket out under a shade tree, and enjoy lunch with your Teddy.

Before going on your picnic listen to the song “The Teddy Bears Picnic” and then sing it.

Lyrics of Teddy Bear Picnic:

If you go down in the woods today,
You’re sure of a big surprise.
If you go down in the woods today,
You’d better go in disguise.

For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain because
Today’s the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic.

Every Teddy Bear who’s been good
Is sure of a treat today.
There’s lots of marvelous things to eat
And wonderful games to play.

Beneath the trees where nobody sees
They’ll hide and seek as long as they please
‘Cause that’s the way the Teddy Bears have their picnic.

If you go down in the woods today,
You’d better not go alone.
It’s lovely down in the woods today,
But safer to stay at home.

For every bear that ever there was
Will gather there for certain because
Today’s the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic.

Picnic time for Teddy Bears…
The little Teddy Bears are having a lovely time today.
Watch them, catch them unawares,
And see them picnic on their holiday.

See them gaily gad about.
They love to play and shout.
They never have any care.

At six o’clock their Mummies and Daddies
Will take them home to bed,
Because they’re tired little Teddy Bears.

In 1907, John Walter Bratton wrote the song “The Teddy Bears’ Picnic,” the only purely instrumental song in his repertoire. With its bouncy march music, the song became Bratton’s only hit. In 1932, songwriter James Kennedy wrote the memorable lyrics to the song, making it an instant children’s classic. Many singers—Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Jerry Garcia and Anne Murray—have recorded the song, making it a hit that has outlasted many decades.

Teddy Bear Picnic Activities and Games:

• Hold a competition for the best-dressed bear.
• Hold a competition for the smallest and tallest bears.
• Hold a competition for best-named bear.
• Play hide and seek with the bears. The rules are up to you!
• Have the kids play act being a bear.
• Play look out for the bear – Choose one player to be the “bear”. This player hides in some part of the room or garden, while the rest, with their backs turned, are standing at their goal.

Count and seek. As soon as the players have counted 50 or 100, they all scatter and hunt for the “bear.” The player who finds him first calls out, “Look out for the bear,” and all the players run to their goal.

If the bear catches any players while running for the goal, they become “bears.” These “bears” hide together and the game continues until all the players are “bears.”
• You can play act this teddy bear poem.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn around,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch the ground,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, reach up high
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, wink one eye,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, slap your knees,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, sit down please.

• If you have construction paper handy, you and your children can create teddy bear ear headbands to wear while having your picnic

Winning is FUN!

What great responses to the contest question and we have 8 winners. I knew that I was going to make room for at least five couples but I just loved all the comments and I wanted you all to come and play in my sandbox for a day! So everyone who commented receives a couples ticket to this weekends workshop. Congratulations to each of you. I look forward to meeting you this Saturday and helping you become a Love of Learning Parent.

Thanks to Maribel who was brave enough to give us an example of what happens when we require, even if it is something kids normally like to do. It is so helpful to just observe a child in action and then to find out why they like a thing before we try to “help” them. It is important to see if it is just a one time interest or something that they want to know more about. We need to let the learning be theirs and not get in the way of it. Thanks Maribel!

I loved all of the examples of things that work. Katy was right on. You have to be watching and “seeing” in order to catch what interests your child. One way to do that really well is to learn to be Present. Learn what that means and then make time to do it. I teach that you can learn to be present with just 3 minutes a day. It works!

Suzanne gave a beautiful example of how much children really want our presence. It isn’t always about what they need, what they are doing or even a question they want answered. Many times it is just that they want our presence, they want to know that we have put them on our list and hopefully at the top, if only for a few minutes.

I really appreciated Marie’s comment that being present can be so energizing. “It’s those magical moments that renew and refresh me as a mother that I want to learn how to make more frequent in our lives!” Bonnie said it well. “I want to be more willing to slow down and do things their way and at their pace.”

Every parent who commented, both moms and dads, really were talking about the same thing. How can we really be with our children in ways that invigorate the relationship and bring joy? When we consider education in our home that is one place to start. When relationships are whole and not strained and we focus on the child, then they are in an environment to really love learning.

This weekends workshop is all about this – our being present parents, seeing our children with new eyes and creating an environment conducive to love of learning. I welcome you to join us learn to become a love of learning Parent. We are going to have a BALL!
