By small things are great things brought to pass.

An older, tired-looking dog wandered into my yard.  I could tell from his collar and well-fed belly that he had a home and was well taken care of.  He calmly came over to me, I gave him a few pats on his head; he then followed me into my house, slowly walked down the hall, curled up in the corner and fell asleep.cute golden retriever sleeping pictures

An hour later, he went to the door, and I let him out.

The next day he was back, greeted me in my yard, walked inside and resumed his spot in the hall and again slept for about an hour. This continued off and on for several weeks.

Curious, I pinned a note to his collar: ‘I would like to find out who the owner of this wonderful dog is and ask if you are aware that almost every afternoon your dog comes to my house for a nap.’

The next day he arrived with a different note pinned to his collar: ‘He lives in a home with 6 children, 2 under the age of 3. He’s trying to catch up on his sleep.  Can I come with him tomorrow?’

I just had to share this wonderful story with you. It is sooooooo true. Raising children is a 24/7 occupation and it can be very tiring. However, with the right outlook it can also be the most wonderful thing that we ever engage in.

I began working with parents to educate them how to use the tool called The Spark Station. What I really spend most of my time doing is helping parents see their children differently. I help them stop seeing their children as a burden, a job, a responsibility, an obstacle to things that need to be done, or problems to be solved.

My mission is to help parents change their sight and their hearts, to see their children with new eyes. When we see differently, we behave differently. When we behave differently we get new results. We don’t have to grit our teeth and say, “I am going to do this right thing if it kills me!” Will power isn’t what makes a home a heaven; seeing our children as people, that we really like and want to be with does.

kid jumping on bed picture

Although The Spark Station is an educational tool it can help you in your efforts to like being with your children. When you observe the Five Rules of Engagement you set up a space of time without distractions to commune with your children as people. You get to watch them, laugh with them, read with them and learn with them. The trick is to make time consistently and then let go of the world and be present.

Each night at 9:00 Don and I have our structured family learning time. It isn’t always easy to tear ourselves away from our work, hobbies, phone or whatever other pursuits we have going. But we have committed to do it. The result has been wonderful. We like spending this time together. We have read scriptures and are almost finished with our second book. We have begun to converse about what we are reading, what happened during the day and we are even branching out into dreams and goals. WOW!
ships at sea picture
I love this verse in the Bible, in James: Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor (pilot) listeth. James 3:4

You are the pilot of a great ship, your family. You are beset by fierce winds both from with in (your own weaknesses) and without (distractions from the world). Yet, by implementing small changes for good, just a 1% improvement, you can turn your ship around. Have faith in yourself to learn, grow and change. Have faith in your children that they can weather the storm of your growth and theirs. Remember by small and simple things are great things brought to pass.

Aubrey, age 10

Here is another Spark Station Letter example that grandparents and other “far-away” adults can use to inspire the children they love.

Dear Aubrey,

I am so sorry that I missed writing to you in April. It is a bummer, I know. I have a wonderful coaching-speaking business which takes a bit of time. I also help a few elderly people out and I am working a few hours a day for the US Census to help pay for Aunt Kate’s wedding. So I let myself just get really busy. I will watch that in the future because writing to you and your sisters is a real pleasure for me and I MISSED IT!!!!

The census has been taken every ten years since the early days of the United States of America, 1790 to be exact. The word for “every ten years” is decennial. The Constitution requires only that the decennial census be a population count. So when the census started all they asked a family was how many people lived in their house.u.s census bureau images

When all the people were counted they could tell by the number how many representatives each state could have in Congress. Some states have a lot more than other states because more people live there. That helps people have an equal say in what happens in the government. Utah could have had another representative in Congress if they had had only 800 more people counted ten years ago!congress logo marker picture

The census office was only open once every ten years for the counting. But soon they started asking for a lot more information. They wanted to know what a family made, what race they were, their education and so forth. Then they looked at all this information to see what was happening in the country, in each area.

Now there was so much information to look at that the census office began staying open the full ten years just to count it all.  The work of processing this data kept the temporary Census Office open almost all the time between each census. President Theodore Roosevelt asked Congress to make it a permanent agency in 1902.

So now, an agency that we only had to pay for once every ten years, is open all the time and costs a lot of money. That really bugs some people. People also started getting mad at all the questions that were being asked. As time went on people started to not trust the government as much and they would not answer the questions. So then the government made it a law that you had to answer the census questions. That really made some people mad.

Well, I noticed that this year they asked even fewer questions than the form I filled out ten years ago. They only ask who lives in your house, their names, if you are buying it or renting it and what race you are. There are still some people that don’t want to answer these questions.census workers picture

I have been doing pretty well. All the houses that I have gone to have been willing to give me this information, except one. Even though he didn’t trust the government and wouldn’t answer my questions he was very nice about it.

Remember I said that they use the counting of people to decide how many representatives each state has in Congress, in Washington. Well they use the information for other things now. They use the numbers to decide how to share lots of money with each state for government programs. I am not really happy about that. I wish the government would just handle foreign affairs (dealing with other countries) and stuff like that and let each state handle their own business.

They also use the information from the census in genealogy work. You can look at old census records and it gives names of families. Sometimes you can find your relatives this way. That is a very good thing. It is interesting that the information I am collecting this year won’t be made public for 72 years. So I will never be able to use it for genealogy and you will have to live to be 82 to use it! Can you believe that?

Census in 1940

Here is a census worker collecting information in 1940. I was not born then and wouldn’t be born until the next census in 1950.

For a long time all the information that was gathered had to be looked at and written down by hand. That was very hard work. Now we have

machines that do that work. It saves a lot of time and mistakes.

Well Aubrey now you know all about the US Census and some of what grandma is doing every day. I love you and hope that all is going well at school. You will be done in just a few weeks. Tell mommy to look at grandma’s blog and find out how to create a magical learning space for you and the girls this summer. You will LOVE it.

Love,

Grandma

president woodrow wilson picture

Woodrow Wilson, President of the United States

Woodrow Wilson was over ten years of age before he learned to read. He may have had dyslexia which would have made reading difficult.  As a teenager he taught himself shorthand to compensate. He was able to achieve academically through determination and self-discipline. He studied at home under his father’s guidance and took some classes in a small school in Augusta.

In 1873 he went to Davidson College in North Carolina, and then transferred to Princeton.  Beginning in his second year, he read widely in political philosophy and history.

In 1879 Woodrow attended law school for one year. He never graduated because of his frail health, and he went home where he continued his studies.

Woodrow did start a law practice but he found staying current with the law got in the way of his plans to study government. What he wanted was a political career. He eventually became the 28th president of the United States.

william blake picture

William Blake, English poet

William Blake was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. William did not attend school and was educated at home by his mother.

Blake started engraving copies of drawings of Greek antiquities purchased for him by his father, a practice that was then preferred to actual drawing. His parents knew enough of his headstrong temperament that he was not sent to school but was instead enrolled in drawing classes. He read avidly on subjects of his own choosing. During this period, Blake was also making explorations into poetry.

Largely unrecognized during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of both the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age.

Albert Einstein, theoretical physicist

Albert Einstein attended a Catholic Elementary school from the age of five until ten. Although Einstein had early speech difficulties, he was a top student in elementary school. As he grew Albert built models and mechanical devices for fun and began to show a talent for mathematics.

When Albert was ten he had a wonderful mentor named Max Talmud. Max introduced Albert to key texts in science, mathematics and philosophy. Max was a poor Jewish medical student from Poland. He took his meals with the Einstein’s each week on Thursdays for six years. During this time Max wholeheartedly guided Einstein through many secular educational interests.

When his family moved to Italy Albert stayed behind in Munich at the Luitpold Gymnasium. His father wanted him to become an electrical engineer. Albert didn’t do well because he resented the schools regime and teaching method. He later wrote that the spirit of learning and creative thought were lost in strict rote learning. He left the school and joined his family in Italy.

Albert was now 15 years old and he wrote his first scientific work called “The Investigation of the State of Aether in Magnetic Fields “. Albert became a theoretical physicist, philosopher, and author who is widely regarded as one of the most influential and best known scientists and intellectuals of all time.

I never teach my pupils; I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.” — Albert Einstein

John Wesley picture

John Wesley, Christian theologian

John Wesley was the youngest of fifteen children. His father was a graduate of the University of Oxford and a Church of England rector.

As in many families at the time, Wesley’s parents gave their children their early education. Each child, including the girls, was taught to read as soon as they could walk and talk. At age 11, John was sent to the Charterhouse School in London, where he lived the studious, methodical and religious life in which he had been trained at home.

During John’s early adult years he was greatly influenced by classic books. John became an Anglican cleric and Christian theologian. He and his brother are largely credited as founding the Methodist movement.

He repeated the year, studied hard and finished with honors. He graduated a year late but received his commission as a cavalry officer.

George  participated in the first-ever modern pentathlon at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm, Sweden.  He finished fifth overall.Because of his military feats he gained the nickname “Old blood and guts”.
