What is K-12 school

K-12, computerized learning

The question has come up: What is K-12 education.

K–12 is a designation for the primary grades and secondary education. It is used in the United States, Canada, and other countries. The expression is a shortening of Kindergarten (4-6 years old) through 12th grade (16-19 years old) These are the first and last grades of free education in the United States, Australia and English Canada. It is often used in school website URLs. The term PK-12 is sometimes used to add pre-kindergarten.

Most communities in the United States and Canada (and wherever else the term is used) are just beginning to provide modern information technology at the K-12 levels. K–14 education also includes community colleges (first two years of university) and K–16 education adds a four-year undergraduate university degree.

Curriculum based school anywhere

K-12 is also the designation for an online school program. This program is different from traditional schools in that classes do not take place in a building. Most students take courses from their own home with support from their teacher via phone and Internet. This educational program is available across the U.S. and around the world.

It is a U.S. based curriculum for domestic and international students that meets or exceeds U.S. standards for public education. There is no waiting list and the program starts monthly for new students. Learning can occur wherever an internet connection is available. The program is individualized. It is a curriculum based program.

K-12 offers an online Public School option. This is a full time, tuition free on line public school available in many states.

They offer an online Private School option. Their international academy is fully accredited and U.S, diploma granting.

They also offer Individual courses for sale and have over 200 courses, including AP and world languages, for direct purchase.

They provide language courses in five languages, – Spanish, French, German, Latin, and Chinese. These courses are designed specifically for children, with levels from grades 3 through 12.

I cannot endorse the K-12 program as I do not have personal experience with it. However, there are parents and children who like it. If you want a curriculum based program at home, check it out.

There are many different ways to help a child gain an education. However, helping them love to learn is the real trick. Check out the education of some more famous people like Peter Cooper.

A lovely Valentine Letter from Grandparents

by Mary Ann on February 14, 2011

valentine's day pictures

I LOVE YOU

Dear Aubrey, Ashley and Elizabeth (I know you like being called Elizabeth),

When I was a girl I loved Valentines Day and I hated it too. I loved making my Valentines box and making Valentines for my friends. I loved our class parties and all the treats. I hated that I might not get a card from the boy I liked or some of my classmates.

valentine in 1950-1960

Here is what a valentine looked like in the 1950’s when I was a girl. Many times though I made my own valentines with lace doilies and red paper hearts. It was fun!

I can still remember my favorite Valentines Day box. It was actually two large blue hearts with frilly edges glued together which made a pouch. I thought it was magnificent but I remember that my teacher mentioned that she thought it ought to be red or pink or white. Hmmm. I was always doing something different. I guess I liked being creative.

Do you know why Valentine’s Day is celebrated?  The story of how St. Valentine’s Day came to be is a real mystery. SomeSt.Valentine pictures say it comes from ancient roman traditions and some say it has Christian origins. There are at least three men named Valentine that have been made Saints by the Catholic Church. One legend, and the one I like best, says that a wonderful, kind man named Valentine continued to marry young couples despite a law forbidding young men to marry. The emperor thought that single men made better soldiers. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Emperor Claudius ordered that he be put to death.

Another story says that Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl — who may have been his jailor’s daughter — who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed “From your Valentine”. So that is the history of Valentine’s Day.

By the middle ages, which was a really, really long time ago, St. Valentine had become one of the most popular saints. I think it is because we all want a hero to look up to and we all like romantic stories!

Esther Howland, Mother of the American valentine

Americans probably began exchanging hand-made valentines in the early 1700s. In the 1840s, Esther A.

Howland began to sell the first mass-produced valentines in America and according to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated one billion valentine cards are sent each year, making Valentine’s Day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year. Can you guess which holiday comes in first? Let me know if you figure it out.

A day of love, like Valentines day, is celebrated in many other countries and in many different ways. Here are just a few that I know you are going to find interesting.

* In the county of Norfolk  in England, a character called ‘Jack’ Valentine knocks on the rear door of houses leaving sweets and presents for children.

BE MY VALENTINE

*In Finland Valentine’s Day is called Ystävänpäivä which translates into “Friend’s day”. As the name indicates, this day is more about remembering all your friends, not only your loved ones.

*In Romania, the traditional holiday for lovers is Dragobete, which is celebrated on February 24.

*In Slovenia, a proverb says that “St Valentine brings the keys of roots,” so on February 14, plants and flowers start to grow. Valentine’s Day has been celebrated as the day when the first work in the vineyards and in the fields starts.

*In Wales, many people celebrate St Dwynwen’s Day on January 25.

*In some Latin American countries Valentine’s Day is known as “Día del Amor y la

valentines card images

Amistad” (Day of Love and Friendship). For example  Mexico,  Costa Rica, and Ecuador. Although it is similar to the United States’ version in many ways, it is also common to see people do “acts of appreciation” for their friends.

*In Brazil, the Dia dos Namorados (“Day of the Enamored”, or “Boyfriends’/Girlfriends’ Day”) is celebrated on June 12, when couples exchange gifts, chocolates, cards and flower bouquets.

*In South Korea, women give chocolate to men on February 14, and men give non-chocolate candy to women on March 14 (White Day). On April 14 (Black Day), those who did not receive anything on the 14th of Feb or March go to a Chinese restaurant to eat black noodles and “mourn” their single life

*In Japan, the romantic “date night” is celebrated on Christmas Eve.

*In Iran, the Esfandegan, is an age-old traditional celebration of love, friendship and Earth.

Can you find all of these places on your map? Let me know if you find them all.

Even though we may not call it by the same name or even celebrate in the same way, everywhere people want to remember those they love and care about.

I know that you girls will LOVE some Valentine activities so here you go.

Van Gogh paintings pictures

Starry Night by Van Gough

Today I read a beautiful article:  Godly Parenting: New Dimensions of Compassion by Wallace Goddard. It was about bringing up and teaching children with compassion. I hope you will read it.

I frequently talk about “seeing children with new eyes”. Mr. Goddard calls that ‘seeing them with compassion’. When we feel compassion for our children we are gentle with their efforts to learn and the mistakes they make in the process.

I want to share two stories from the article that demonstrate the power of softness over hardness in our relationships with our children. They are also instructive as to the power of gentleness upon our ability to teach.

The first story occurred between Anjelica Huston and her famous father, film director, John Huston.

“Once, at the dinner table, the subject of van Gogh came up. I said somewhat flippantly that I didn’t like van Gogh. “You don’t like van Gogh?” he countered. “Then name six of his paintings and tell me why you don’t like them.” I couldn’t, of course. And he said, “Leave the room, and until you know what you’re talking about, don’t come back with your opinions to the dinner table.’

John responded to Anjelica’s ill-informed judgment with strong correction—but no compassion. When we correct without “persuasion, by long-suffering, by gentleness and meekness, and by love, we do not enrich and educate people; we enrage them. The devil laughs and families suffer.” Godly Parenting: New Dimensions of Compassion By Wallace Goddard

Les Parapluies (The Umbrellas 1883) by Renoir

The second story comes from a Jewish immigrant to America who wrote about replacing hardness with softness in parenting, This man was Haim Ginott and he taught about compassion in parenting. He wrote the still-acclaimed book Between Parent and Child.

“When Ashley, age fourteen, criticized modern painting, mother did not dispute her opinion. Nor did she condemn her taste.

Mother: You don’t like abstract art?

Ashley: I sure don’t. It’s ugly.

Mother: You prefer representational art?

Ashley: What’s that?

Mother: You like it when a house looks like a house, and a tree like a tree and a person like a person.

Ashley: Yes.

Mother: Then you like representational art.

Ashley: Imagine that. All my life I liked representational art and didn’t know it.” Godly Parenting: New Dimensions of Compassion By Wallace Goddard

Great Piece of Turf( 1503) by Albrecht Dürer

Contrast this gentle approach with the one described earlier in which John Huston reacted to Anjelica’s statement. Huston’s response was to humiliate. Ashley’s mother’s desire was to educate. When we respond to children with compassion,  that is the difference it makes. It is compassion which helps us see with new eyes. And when we see with new eyes we can better help our children love learning.

Family mission statements can go along way in helping us see our famiies with more compassion. You will find family mission statement examples here.

Teaching basic Math and Geometry with Carpentry

by Mary Ann on February 10, 2011

Carpentry is a great way to teach Math and Geometry

Carpentry and simple construction provide great lessons in basic math – and give help in understanding more complex geometry. From counting nails and the turns of a screw to talking about geometric angles and degrees, a building project can be building more than a piece of furniture or a piece of a house; it can build an understanding of how basic geometric shapes and planes work and fit together to create our world. Carpentry can provide fun math activities.

So where can we begin with our children to help them learn math through basic construction, especially if we don’t know anything about it ourselves?

carpentry for children book pictures

Carpentry for Children by Les Walker

Here are two outstanding books that will give children, as well as youth and adults,

Housebuilding for Children book pictures

Housebuilding for Children by Les Walker

all the information they need to enter the world of carpentry; Carpentry for Children and Housebuilding for Children by Lester Walker. These books are exciting and inspiring. They have great content on basic carpentry projects.

Both books are simply written – most 7 to 10 year olds should have no trouble following the directions with minimal or no adult assistance. There are line drawings and diagrams on every page, as well as photographs of children hammering, sawing, drilling, and assembling and using their carpentry projects. But these books aren’t just for young children. Older children and adults will also appreciate the clear, detailed instructions on buying and using tools and setting up a workshop, and the step-by-plans.

Walker worked with his son, Jess (7 years old at the time Housebuilding for Children was written, and 12 in Carpentry for Children) and a group of other children, who built all of the projects illustrated in the books. Carpentry for Children contains projects ranging in complexity from a tug-boat and block set through stilts, lemonade stand, easel, and coaster car. The instructions make the success seem very attainable even for the youngest carpenters.

Children love to build things

In the introduction to Housebuilding for Children , Walker writes, “This book is written for young people who want to build houses just as older people do.” There are designs for six child-sized houses that will satisfy any aspiring builder. After children work through the first book they will be ready to tackle a really big project. (Walker instructs his readers to saw 100 cuts and drive 100 nails for practice before starting on a serious project.)

Using math in everyday life is the best way to learn it. Remember this simple rule; find something they are interested in that uses math, then teach them how to do that!

For younger children start by making  a keelboat out of Popsicle sticks.
