Turning 40 and a special request

by Mary Ann on April 2, 2012

I LOVE You

A few years before I turned forty, I decided that I was going to really celebrate that milestone birthday. So I had a poem written for the occasion, and a few weeks before the day had it published in the local paper with an invitation to an open house. Yes, I threw myself a huge party. Our whole town was invited. It was amazing.

I also found myself pregnant! That was totally unexpected and in fact, made me consider cancelling the big party I had planned for over two years. But I just grinned and bore it and I had a terrific party and then 3 months later I had our seventh child.

It is interesting how life tends to repeat itself. My oldest daughter had her fourth baby two weeks ago. Today she turns 40! Here is her letter to all of you out there who are willing to grant a birthday wish. It is an amazing and beautiful request. It is so Jodie!! Do not pass up this opportunity to view a short video that will bring tears to your eyes, a smile to your soul and a desire to bless the world.

Jodie Palmer

My dear friends and family,

Today is my 40th birthday. I have a special birthday wish that I’d like from you.

Or, you can check out my video.

I hope you’ll take a minute to grant my birthday wish today.

Love to you!

Jodie Palmer

Skills to build character while you read

by Mary Ann on March 30, 2012

Do you have things come into your life that you just love? I do. I have a number of wonderful resources that I want to share with you over the next few days. Bear in mind that I am NOT being paid to tell you about these resources. I just like them.

The first one is the Ten Boom Institute. They have a mission that I just love.

OUR MISSION
Inspiring individuals and families to better themselves through studying great works and applying the true principles they contain.

My Search for Reading Skills

Here is why I love it. I went to college in the late 60’s and early 70’s. I majored in Special Education. Many years later, in my 40’s I went back and finished and got my Master’s. With all of that school you would think that I would feel pretty educated. Right!

Well the truth is that I didn’t. I knew that I had not developed good reading strategies. Oh, over the years I had read thousands of books. I taught myself to read at age 4. However, I had not learned any skills to help me build character while I read. There is more to reading than just reading comprehension, knowing what you just read. I wanted to be more clear about why what I read was important or not.

I didn’t know how to see symbolism, how to extract principles, and other valuable skills. I had never been taught anything about how to determine what a classic was. Since that time I have really wanted to develop better reading strategies.

In my search for venues to learn and practice new skills I have run across the Ten Boom Institute. I listened to a free class called “How to Hold Dynamic Book Discussions”. WOW!

I had attended a book club every month for about a year in my church. Then I dropped out because it just wasn’t about the book. It was enjoyable, we had great refreshments and we learned a lot about each other. But it really wasn’t about exploring a book.

I had recently been giving it another try but I realized that most of us in the group really didn’t know what a book group should accomplish or how to make it happen. The call helped me so much and I learned a lot.

Skills to Build Character While You Read

At the Ten Boom Institute they want you to be able to build character while you read by mastering four types of skills:

  • Discussion
  • Research and analysis
  • Organizing thoughts
  • Oral and written persuasion

Here is why I am telling you about the Ten Boom Institute now. They are having another free class. It is a class which I am equally interested in, how to find principles in a book and how to ask good questions.

I have heard over and over that when the student is ready the teacher will come. I have been thinking a lot lately about good question asking skills; now, voila, a chance to learn more. I just love how the universe works!

I also suggest that you check out the institute itself. They have amazing courses for adults. Truly educated adults can lead families better. So just in case this is a topic that interests you, here is the information on the call.

Free Call to Learn Skills to build character while you read:

“Principles & Questions:
The Heart of Study & Discussion”
What will be covered:
• What principles are and why they matter
• How to study for principles
• How to discern between principles, opinions and applications
• How questions aid learning
• 5 types of questions to ask when reading and discussing

When: Thursday, April 5th at 7:30 MST 8:30 pm CST
How: *To join us dial: 661-673-8600 Access code 373301#

I would love to hear about your experience with the Ten Boom Institute and their classes.

Making Homeschool Work for Special Needs

by Mary Ann on March 27, 2012

Cindy Walker and Maggie learn about the letter "M"

Maggie has severe cerebral palsy. Maggie has a very special friend named Cindy Walker. She comes over to have school every week and gives Maggie some special time and attention. If you have a special needs child then finding a “special” friend for them can be a real help. Cindy helps make homeschool work for Maggie’s special needs. Maggie’s CP symptoms are: she can’t verbally speak, use her arms and hands well, walk, move on her own, or express herself in words. Cindy has become very good at teaching this child with CP.

When Cindy comes she has learning activities that she can assist Maggie to do. She includes Jack (age 4) and Mary (age 2) if they are interested. Sometimes they are but Maggie is almost 6 and so many of her activities just don’t hold their attention.

The last time that Cindy came I was watching my grandchildren and so I got to see what a fun time they had and I want to share what they did with you.

Maggie is learning all about the letter “M”. This is a letter that we are really working on helping her say. Her lips do not close like most children’s so it is an extraordinary challenge for Maggie. So today they were doing some more “M” practice.

They made a collage of many different pictures all starting with M. Cindy said the M word and then Maggie tried to say the M word.

Making an "M" collage

Practicing writing "M's" and Maggie

Cindy, who spends a lot of time helping and thinking about Maggie, had made a darling picture story about “Mary, the Mouse with Measles”. All the children loved reading the story.

Mary the Mouse has measles!

Each time that Cindy comes she and Maggie create a journal page for Maggie’s “Learning Journal” Today they wrote about the trip that they all took to the Utah School for the Deaf to have Maggie’s ears tested. They wrote about the sounds they heard and Cindy and Maggie recreated the sound pitches. Here is what they wrote together: Jack and I had our hearing tested. We can hear. (Cindy asked Maggie, “Do we need a period or an exclamation mark?”) Then they practiced saying “We can hear” with emphasis! At this point Jack exclaimed “I am Buzz Lightyear. I come in peace!!!

Discussing what to write in Maggie's journal.

While Maggie was busy learning Jack was all over the table and chairs blowing his train whistle, eating cookies and making comments. He also turned the popcorn popper lid into a Darth Vader mask. Cindy is VERY patient!

"Luke I am your father!" Yes Jack does say that with just the right amount of breathiness. : )

Maggie drew some “M” pictures with some special crayons. She loves working at holding on to things and seeing the result.

Maggie has learned to hold a crayon. Way to go Maggie!!!

Of course they ended their “m” session by eating marshmallows. Maggie enjoyed that the most!

MMMMMMM for marshmallows!

To finish off the day they read from their children’s classic “The Secret Garden”. This book did NOT appeal to Jack.

Maggie follows along with her finger.

Working with special needs children can be fun and very rewarding. To sumarize: When homeschooling a special needs child

  •  Be patient
  • Let them do everything they can.
  • Help as much as they need, they will still feel accomplished.
  • Develop a system so they can answer questions. (Maggie can choose one of two fingers)
  • Remember they are just like any child in their need to do and learn.
  • They are interested in the same things as other children.
  • Don’t be afraid to let them try. They aren’t afraid to try!

How do you make homeschool work for your special needs child?
