Playing Bridge
I have a friend who is 89. She is spy, plays bridge and looks great. I was helping her one day and I noticed that she was working on a roll of packing tape for about 10 minutes. I finally asked her, “Do you need some help”? She replied that she had been trying to get the roll of tape to work for over two weeks. She could see and feel where it began but she just couldn’t get the end to come up so she could use it. It was frustrating.
She handed me the tape and I saw the problem immediately. There was a wrinkle in the tape and for two weeks she had been trying to pull the wrinkle up. It looked like the end of the roll and it felt like the end of the roll. But it wasn’t the end of the roll. The end was about ½ inch father along the roll. In just a few seconds I was able to get the tape loose and she was on her way. After two weeks of frustration and work she had her package ready to mail in a few minutes.
That is what happens to us so many times. We know we need to work something out. We give it time, we are persistent, we do our best and then we are frustrated because we do not get the results we are looking for. Sometimes all we need is someone with a new view to show us how to move forward.
I can see what you may not be able to see.

I can’t solve all of your parenting concerns or your educational ones. But I do understand children and I am pretty adept at inspire and not require. I like being with children and find them fascinating to talk to. This wasn’t always the case.

Usually the only time I see a spark in my child is when I am at his/her level. If I am looking into his eyes and focusing on him, the world changes. Whether it’s math problems or a fun science experiment, when I focus on my child – learning happens for all of us.
A couple of my children will NOT get to the point when talking to me. Repeating phrases, getting distracted etc. UNLESS I stop what I am doing and am present for them the entire time they needed to talk to me. Only then can they really communicate clearly, I suppose only then am I communicating clearly as well.
I have had a blast teaching my children to read! –When my daughter reads a word, then with surprise and excitement loudly proclaims, “I can read!!!!!” Then grins and want to do a second lesson! I LOVE IT!
My kids always want to do what I am doing – the trick is getting myself to be doing the right things! My favorite way to get them to practice the piano is by sitting down to play something myself – they all come running. 🙂
I love reading to my children. I love sitting on the couch with a huge pile of library books and reading away. I also love reading children’s classics to them. My son (7) also loves to read. I would love to come to this seminar and learn more about teaching my kids. It’s frustrating at times knowing what to do.
I, too, have found that really focusing on my kids fills my energy rather than draining it. It’s those magical moments that renew and refresh me as a mother that I want to learn how to make more frequent in our lives! When they feel heard and understood and entranced and excited about what we’re learning together, especially when the “learning” seems effortless.
My kids are still young enough that we haven’t begun any structured schooling time – we’re starting this fall. One time last year (my daughters were 3 1/2 and almost 2) we went on a walk after it had been raining. I tried to let them choose the pace and where we went. We got distracted for 20 minutes watching and discussing worms and their lives and watching all of them go by. I was happy with that moment; I want to be more willing to slow down and do things their way and at their pace.
First off, I’m Bonnie’s (commenter above) husband, so you needn’t count us twice. I simply wanted to comment also. Bonnie is way ahead of me on home school stuff, but I’m interested in getting more involved.
Like most anyone, I see my kids as totally amazing. One thing I love is to play the piano while they dance. “Daddy, watch my trwick!” is common though I musn’t stop playing to watch! Twirls and falls and kicks and life enjoyed. I don’t know that this is the “spark” you’re looking for, yet it certainly makes for good times.
I saw my 9 year old son, played with juggling balls and taught of getting him more into and instead of inspiring and letting go, I manage to make it a requirement and he stop being interested. 🙁

I keep seeing a “spy” spark in my 10 year old son. I originally thought psst there is no way to use that topic in a closet. Boy, was I wrong! There’s lots of good stuff. We have recently moved and I am still unpacking but have acquired a closet to host some fun activities. I have only explained to my son what the closet will be used for. Just recently I sent him to the recycle bin with a soda bottle to which he said, ” let’s put it in the closet. We can use it for some fun activity!” Love it already and we haven’t even started.
